Ace Akai lays down the foundation of Christian Hip-Hop beats with Ace’s Attic Records

When creating Christian Hip-Hop beats, Ace Akai incorporates gospel samples into his mixes.  According to Gospel Roots of Rock and Soul, gospel samples have found their way into various genres of secular music, but their influence extends far beyond secular works.  In his production process, Akai weaves together an array of gospel samples and string arrangements to craft hip-hop beats that reflect his Christian faith.  His journey into Christian hip-hop production was inspired by artists like NF and Andy Mineo.  “I wanted to create Christian hip-hop beats from listening to rappers like NF and Andy Mineo.  I appreciated the craft and the production, which influenced me to create my own beats,” said Ace.

In an article titled: Holy Hip-Hop/Christian Rap, the genre is defined as a fusion of powerful hip-hop beats with Christ-centered, biblically influenced lyrics that express both social consciousness and spiritual self-awareness. Ace Akai’s production style embraces this approach by crafting boom bap hip-hop beats and seamlessly integrating Christian-influenced vocals, resulting in authentic Christian hip-hop productions. The impact of his beats on the local community has been so significant that he has established his own record label, Ace’s Attic Records.

Ace Akai takes a deliberate approach to creating beats, drawing on his musical background to determine whether they will serve gospel or secular purposes.  An article titled: Babatunmise, written by Nigerian Tribune, found in Nexis Uni, argues that lyrics are the main factor distinguishing gospel from secular music, Ace’s record company focuses specifically on producing gospel-influenced instrumentals. This gives Christian hip-hop artists the opportunity to collaborate with Ace while advancing their spiritual mission.  Tribune emphasizes that gospel music’s primary purpose is spreading the “good news” through song. When musical elements detract from this message, the work risks being categorized as secular instead of gospel.

However, Ace’s creative process begins at the beat-making stage, where he carefully considers how each musical component and stem will contribute to the track’s ultimate purpose, whether sacred or secular.
